1st European Games Baku: Nominative Roster

baku-logo

The first European Games will  be held from 12th – 28th June  in Baku Azerbaijan. The artistic gymnastics events run from the 14th  – 20th, and the nominative roster has now been released. For Great Britain Rebecca Tunney, Tyesha Mattis, and Kelly Simm are listed, having been announced by British Gymnastics toward the end of April. Of course the nominative roster can always change, and two of the three gymnasts on the list have been fighting back to full fitness for some time now, but hopefully all three girls will be fit and ready to compete.

Kelly Simm has competed well this year at both the British and English championships, and will be seen again in  the Flanders International Team Challenge to be held in Ghent Belgium over the weekend of 30th/31st May. Rebecca Tunney hasn’t been seen in competition since 2014 Europeans, fighting back from an injury sustained in December, she missed the English, British, and Europeans championships this year. Hopefully she too will travel to Ghent for an outing before Baku, British and international gymnastics fans will be thrilled to see her back. Tyesha Mattis returned from her 2014 injury contesting two events at the recent British championships, taking gold on both. She has had minor surgery a few weeks ago on the same ankle injury, so hopefully she will be back to fitness in time to compete. Tyesha when fully fit will be one of the strongest AA gymnasts in GB, to be British champion on her two weakest pieces gives an idea of her potential.

This is a strong team from GB, like the Brits Russia is strong, but Komova and Shelgunova especially are somewhat unknown in terms their likely routines and performance levels. The British girls will be looking for at least  podium sport here as a team, and it’s an entirely realistic prospect. The team competition is 3-3-2 so a completely new format to be tested, for this blogger two does not a team make, but that is what has been decided.

This blog will of course be covering all the action from Baku when the time comes.
