The Welsh team of Latalia Bevan, Maise Methuen, Jolie Ruckley, Hana Davies, and Rebecca Moore began their competitive 2016 by traveling to Las Vegas for the Brestyan’s Invitational .
Brestyan’s gym is the home of Olympians Aly Raisman and Alicia Sacramone. Also attending were gymnasts from Chow’s home of Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas while training for their respective Olympics, and several current US national team gymnasts. MG Elite, home of reigning US Jr champion and silver medalist Laurie Hernandez and Jazmyn Foberg, as well as a large team of up and coming elite gymnasts, there were also many other strong clubs that have put gymnasts on past US world and olympic teams in attendance.
British junior squad member Latalia competed in the Senior A category according to the results. Latalia is a junior gymnast for another year, but still managed to take the AA title, bronze on vault, and gold on bars, beam and floor.
Hana also competed in this category placing 4th AA, 6th on vault and bars, and 4th on beam and floor.
British junior squad member Maisie competed in the Jr D category placing 2nd AA, taking the gold on vault, silvers on bars and beam, and placing 4th on floor.
First year junior, and British junior squad member Jolie placed 2nd AA in the Jr C category, Jolie also took silver on vault, and placed 5th on bars and beam, and 7th on floor.
Rebecca competed in the Senior C category placing 5th AA, 6th on vault and bars, and 4th on beam and floor.
The girls placed 2nd overall in the team event.
Scoring was on the old 10.00 system, so difficult to see how the girls compared to their usual results. Competition over, and the team have headed to Utah for a week of training before returning home ready for the Welsh Championships at the end of the month.
In even more good news for the Welsh team, British senior squad member Raer Theaker will fly out to join her teammates for the training camp, meaning she has recovered well from elbow surgery in November, and will hopefully be ready to compete when the season begins.
Well done gymnasts!
