2016 School Games: Schedule, Format, How To Watch

2015 School Games Champions, team Wales.

As the British senior team return from Rio, we turn our eye back to the British espoir and junior gymnasts they compete for their home nations at the 2016 School Games. The multi sport event complete with opening and closing ceremonies, as well as athlete’s village, is for most the first taste of of this type of format. Many of course will be hoping it is a prelude to the Commonwealth Games in two years time, and then the biggest event of them all in Tokyo four years from now, or following Olympic Games.

This year the games take place at the the Loughborough University campus, with the gymnastics in the Loughborough Sport Tennis Centre.

The Games provide a platform for some of the country’s top espoir and juniors to compete at national level outside of the British championships, and the roll call of previous winners will be familiar to anyone who follows British gymnastics.

2015 – Latalia Bevan
2014 – Georgia-Mae Fenton
2013 – Catherine Lyons
2012 – Ellie Downie
2011 – Angel Romaeo
2010 – Rebecca Tunney

Current British senior squad members Claudia Fragapane, Amy Tinkler, Tyesha Mattis, Gabby Jupp, and Gerogina Hockenhull have all represented their home nations in the event.

Teams are made up of five gymnasts, with no reserves. The age range is 12- 15 in the year of competition, so covering both espoir and junior age groups. For this year, gymnasts born 2001-2004 are eligible. Team members compete for the home nation that they would represent if selected for future Commonwealth Games. There are no rules regarding various squads, gymnasts from each nation can either be members of their home nation squad or not, but most are.

The competition format is 5-5-4, so all team members up on each piece, four highest scores to count.

FIG junior rules apply, so for the vault final gymnasts will compete two vaults which at junior level can, but don’t have to be from the same family.

How To Watch

There will be steaming available on the official games site, but it is not confined as yet whether the gymnastics will be live streamed.

I have had confirmation however that as usual the entire competition will be  live streamed on the BG Score App, and the BG Score App Facebook page.
