A Few Of My Favourite Things 2016. Vault And Bars

As we’ve reached the end of 2016, a post of some of my favorite routines of the year from the British seniors, juniors, and a couple from the Espoirs. Some of the highest scoring routines, some that just caught my eye.

In this first post, vault and bars.

Vault

Ellie Downie Team Final Rio

Ellie’s vault from the Rio team final was the highest scoring vault of the year from a British WAG in open competition with 15.133. A excellent vault, which for me deserved a little more.

Amy Tinkler Rio Olympic Team Final

Another excellent double twisting Yurckenko, the Rio team final again, this time from Amy. 14.933 for this vault, again excellent vaulting, and I personally think it could have gone over fifteen.

Claudia Fragapane European Championships Apparatus Finals Vault 1.

Claudia’s highest scoring vault of the year was her first vault in the European Final. 14.933, a great score for her, and one of the cleanest DTY’s I’ve seen her do.

Ruby Harrold European Championships Team Final

Ruby started her year with the full twisting Yurchenko at teams, brought back the double for the British, and by Europeans was hitting as well as I have seen her do for  14.800

Amelie Morgan Olympic Hopes Cup Apparatus Finals Vault 1

The vault I really wanted to bring you from Amelie was the AA one from this same competition where she scored a huge 14.450 for her full twisting Yurchenko with a D score of 9.450. For this one from apparatus finals she was close to that with 14.300, her clean precise vaulting well rewarded.

Sophie Scott British Junior Championships AA

Sophie took the British Junior vault title this year with her customary strong vaulting. This is her vault from the AA competition where with 14.300, she was the second highest scoring Junior vaulter of the year.

Taeja James

Two vaults from two competitions from Taeja, I have chosen them to illustrate that she is one of the few juniors worldwide already using vaults from two different families preparing her well for when she joins the senior ranks in 2018.

Maisie Methuen School Games AA

A lovely high clean handspring pike from half from Maisie  at the School Games for 14.20.

Shanna-Kae Grant AA British Espoir Championships AA

Newly crowned British Espoir Vault Champion Shanna competed this strong full twisting Yurchenko in the AA for 14.050, a great score and big potential for a gymnast not in the senior ranks until 2020.

Tomique Gibson Challenge Cup

This is Tomique’s vault from the Challenge Cup where she scored 14.150 for the highest score. You can see the quality of her vaulting here. Not available is her vault from the Leverkusen Cup, where with 14.450 she was the equal highest scoring British junior of the year on this piece along with Amelie Morgan.

A little note here, I wanted to add Junior Tomique Gibson of Harrow’s full twisting Yurchenko from the  Unfortunately no footage is available.

Bars

Becky Downie European Championships Final

Becky’s 15.500 was the highest scoring routine from a British gymnast across any piece in 2016. Hitting her big 6.9 D score routine in the European final made her only the second British WAG to become a double European Champion, and gave her the title over reigning (and soon to be repeat) Olympic Champion Aliya Mustafina, and World Champion Daria Spiridonova.

Gabby Jupp British Championships Final

A routine and result that put a smile on everyone’s face. Gabby Jupp after two major injuries and recoveries hit her bars at the British Championships to take the title with 14.750, and return to the top of the podium for the first time since 2013.

Rebecca Tunney British Team Championships

So good to see another one of the British seniors making a strong return, Becky hit her bar routine at the British Team Championships for 14.400, the highest score of the day on her way to team silver with City of Liverpool.

Georgia Mae Fenton Training

A training clip from Georgia-Mae, this is a routine she is building and building on for next year. Increasing difficulty being added to her customary beautiful lines and extension mean that she is working her way toward being one of the top British bar workers. Georgia also has her own unique skill on this piece, the Stalder Tkatachev (Ricna) with half turn.

Ruby Harrold Rio Team final

The final routine of her elite career, Ruby competed well on vault bars and floor in qualifcations, but her real job for Rio was to come and hit her routine in team finals, and with 14.833, that’s exactly what she did, as she had done so many times before. GB’s loss is NCAA’s gain. Geaux Ruby, we will miss you.

Alice Kinsella Junior European Final

Alice came into 2016 with a new routine, and had a few troubles with her upgraded toe full to Pak combination at the beginning of the year. At junior Europeans, she hit it every single time, her routine from qualifications/team final earning her highest score of 13.866

Megan Parker British Team Championships

Extension through the shoulders, commitment to hitting handstands, clean lines, and stretched feet throughout, what’s not to like about Megan Parker on bars!

Ramiyah Kofi British Espoir Championships.

Ramiyah took bronze on bars at the British Espoir Championships, she currently works on the top bar only, so was a little low in difficulty in comparison to some of her peers. I chose this routine for the lovely high flighty Tkatchev with good counter rotation, her beautifully stretched handstands both from cast and close bar elements, and her great swing on her long swings at the end have her on my ones to watch list over the next few years. Ramiyah is from Notts Gymnastics meaning she won’t have to look very far at all for great bars role models.
